A NOTE FROM CLARE

2020 began in a confronting and difficult way in Australia where I live, with the terrible bushfires that have burned an area about the size of Portugal. You’ve probably heard those horrendous stories: thousands of homes destroyed, human lives lost and the death of maybe 1 billion animals. We need more action, education, awareness and collaboration on climate and the environment. Everyone has their part to play. For me it’s about renewing my commitment to doing this work, and telling these stories about sustainability. I’m delighted to welcome the Climate Council on board this series as our presenting partner, thanks to Spell & the Gypsy Collective and 1% for the Planet. SPELL is an Australian fashion label determined to give back to the planet. FOLLOW them on Instagram here. Get informed! The Climate Council provides accurate info on climate change here.

EPISODE 107 FEATURES AMBER VALLETTA

Meet the supermodel, activist, and sustainable fashion’s favourite face. How did she move from celebrity covergirl (she had her own MTV show in the '90s, and in the 2000s did a Hollywood movie with Will Smith) to fashion's eco conscience? Today Amber is perhaps the model most closely associated with eco-fashion, works with Stella McCartney, and protests on behalf of climate action with Jane Fonda.

But can a career in fashion really be sustainable? How does she deal with the overwhelm about over-consumption? Could self-care be the answer?

NOTES

VERSACE JUNGLE DRESS Amber wore the original on the runway, and in a Versace campaign in 1999. When J-Lo wore the dress to the 42nd Grammy Awards in 2000 she “broke the internet”. Fast forward to the Versace SS’20 show and there J-Lo was was again - miraculously looking like she hadn’t aged a year. Read Alexander Fury on the story of the dress-that-became-an-icon on AnOther magazine here.

GOOGLE IMAGES is a search service owned by Google that allows users to search the World Wide Web for image content. It was introduced on July 12, 2001 due to a demand for pictures of Jennifer Lopez's green Versace dress that the regular Google search couldn't handle.

MASTER & MUSE was Amber’s ethical and sustainable fashion online store, launched in 2013. Read more on Eco-Age here.

BEING AHEAD OF THE GAME. “It’s good to be ahead of the game, but it’s always easiest to be on the wave,” says Clare.

STELLA MCCARTNEY AW’19. Amber had the “world” painted on her face for this campaign that got everyone talking. Stella has been an authority on creating positive change for decades, leading the conversation and breaking new ground since launching her sustainably-led label in 2001. For this campaign, she invited collaborations from environmentalist Jane Goodall, members of Extinction Rebellion and “a cast of change agents.” They say: #StellaWinter19 takes a moment to remind us of the beauty of nature and what we need to do to protect it. Full story here.

“Yes, we’ve done a lot of bad, but we also have the potential for a lot of good. So what are we doing? What can we highlight, what we talk about? How can we get out of this perfectionistic paralysis?”
